'Could you let down your hair
And be transparent for a while
Just a little while
See if you're human after all'
"So what brings a girl like you to Cameron, North Carolina?" the guy asked as he drove, trying to make conversation and make sure Amy didn't think he was some creep looking to have sex with her and kill her on the side of the road.
"Just needed to get away and my friend lives there, said it was a nice place. I figured I would check it out."
"Oh it's a nice place alright. Great place for starting over, that is, if that's what you're in it for."
"Yeah, starting over." Amy said, wishing this guy would just shut up and drive. It was nice he was trying to be polite, but did she really have to sit here and listen to this the entire car ride. If that was the case she wanted out of the car right now.
"My name is Gil. Gil Hardy to be more exact. Just coming back from doing some business in your neck of the woods."
"Well Gil, thanks for the ride. If you don't mind I am going to take a nap now."
"Do what you need to little lady. I will let you know when we come to a rest stop."
Amy was glad for the quietness that closing her eyes had brought to the car. She had a lot to think about, mainly where she was going to stay when she got there, let alone what a nice place it may or may not be. She didn't need this old man going off in her ear the entire ride.
'Honesty is a hard attribute to find
When we all want to seem like we've got it all figured out
But let me be the first to say that I don't have a clue
I don't have all the answers'
Stirring awake, not sure how long she had been asleep, Amy looked around, unsure of where she was at that moment. She realized suddenly that the car had stopped and she had no idea where Gil had gone. He had told her that he would wake her when they stopped and now that they were stopped, she had no idea where they were. Unbuckling the seatbelt, she opened the car door and stepped out, taking a quick glance around.
"You lost lady?"
Amy looked up and came face to face with what had to be the ugliest man in the entire world. She thought about walking away and getting back into the car, but didn't want to call too much attention to herself before Gil came back and they got back on the highway.
"Not lost, just missing someone. Did you see where the man I was travelling with went off too?"
"Yeah I saw him. Said to watch the car for ten minutes while he dealt with something in the store. Didn't know there was a pretty thing like you inside, that's for sure, or I would have been out here sooner. Keeping an even closer eye. You know what I mean?"
This guy had to be the creepiest guy Amy had ever seen. She knew exactly what he meant by what he said but there was no way in hell she was going to help his sick imagination along. She had too much to think about as it was.
"Well then I will just wait for him in the car. Thanks man." She said, hopping back into the car and locking the door and making sure the window was completely up. She would be happy when they finally got to Carolina and the hell away from this pit stain of a town.
'But god I pretend like I do just
Trying to find my way
Trying to find my way the best that I know how'
Pulling out her cell phone she dialed a familiar number, knowing that she had better let someone know she was all right and that she wasn't coming home anytime soon.
'Amy where the hell are you?"
"Bum Fuck Idaho from what I can tell. Listen, I am heading to Carolina, and I will call you when I get settled and you can come out with me if you like. If my mother asks don't tell her where I am. Just tell her this is for the best and that I will call her sometime."
"I can do that, but Amy, are you sure this is right? She's already called here looking for you. It's been an entire day already."
"Don't worry Chris, I will call her alright? When I get settled. Now I better go before my ride comes out." "Amy Wait!"
Not listening to her friend any longer, Amy closed the phone and put it back in her bag. She had no idea where she was at this point but from what Christine had told her, it had already been a day since they last spoke, so they had to be making good time. Did it really take a day to get to North Carolina?
'Well I haven't memorized all the cure things to say
But I'm working on it
Maybe I'll master this art for today
If I quote all the lines off the top of my head'
"You ready to go?" Gil asked getting back into the car and throwing her a candy bar.
"For sure. You know, that guy you asked to watch the car was a creep."
"Most people are creeps in this neck of the woods."
"You can say that again."
"So do you know where you're staying once we get there?" Gil asked, looking over at Amy expectantly.
"Haven't worked all that out yet. I am sure I can find a place though."
Laying her head back on the seat, she turned her head to the window, shutting out all thoughts of where she was going to stay when they got to Cameron, and watched the land fly by as the car moved.
'Would you believe that I fully understand all of these things, I've been, I'm just trying to find my
Trying to find my way
Trying to find my way the best that I know how'
"Wake up sleeping beauty, we're here." Gil said shaking Amy lightly to wake her up from her slumber. She had been sleeping for the six-hour ride off and on, and he hadn't bothered to drive her to a local hotel, he just drove her home.
"Is she awake dad? Since when you do pick up strays?" Matt asked his father, gently lifting Amy still sleeping out of the car.
"She's not stray. If anything I think she ran away from home."
"Dad, that's what stray means. Has no home and all that." Jeff said quietly, watching his brother and his father help carry the young girl into the house. Moving up the steps slowly behind them, he noticed that she had the darkest red hair he had ever seen.
Laying her down on the couch, the guys went back out the car to get the rest of the luggage, leaving Jeff alone with the girl, watching her intently, making sure she didn't move. When she fluttered her eyes and slowly awoke from the couch, her eyes met his and she started to open her mouth to scream.
'Where the hell am I?" Amy asked, trying to gather herself, after just waking up in some strange house.
"My dad brought you here rather then take you to a hotel. Hi, I'm Jeff Hardy."
Amy had to almost keep herself from laughing. If he was a killer he had the softest voice she had ever heard and the weirdest accent to boot. But she couldn't help noticing how attractive he was. Was there such a thing as a hot killer?
"Your dad is Gil?"
"One and the same. So you see, I am not here to kill you. My brother and my dad just assumed it would be better to carry you in here and let you sleep then wake you up."
"Yeah because we wouldn't want to freak out the girl right?"
"Right." Jeff said, his eyes crinkling and his dimple showing as he broke into a huge smile. Amy had to admit that he was nice on the eyes and had a cute smile to boot. Maybe being here wouldn't be so bad after all.
'Well I haven't got it all figured out quite yet
But even if it takes my whole life
To get to where I need to be
And if I should fall to the bottom of the end'
As Amy sat on the couch looking at the younger guy in front of her, the older brother and Gil came back into the room.
"Oh the princess awakens." Matt said, laughing and coming up beside Jeff, holding his hand out to shake hers.
"Yeah, some princess. The name Is Amy Dumas. I already met Jeff Hardy, so who the hell are you?"
"Wow, she's a rude stray ain't she dad?"
'Yeah you didn't know. Our dad picked you up, you are a runaway, so that makes you a stray."
"What Jeff, it's true ain't it?"
Jeff turned away at that moment, and walked into the kitchen to help Gil remove some of the groceries from the bags. Matt looked at Amy and realized she wasn't all that nice on the eyes. She had dirty hair and she looked like she had been underground for years, she was full of dirt and dust. What was his dad thinking bringing this girl home?
"So Amy, would you like me to take you to your friends house now?"
"Actually sir, that would be-
"Can't she stay for dinner dad? I think we can handle another mouth for one night. You can have me or Matt take her later on if she really wants to go." Jeff said, flashing a smile at Amy before going back to filling the fridge.
"Would you like to stay for dinner Amy?"
Amy couldn't think of anything she would rather do tonight. She didn't have any place to go, and the friends that told her about Cameron, probably wouldn't take her in. So having one meal that was home cooked seemed like a dream. She could worry about where she was going to stay later.
'I'll be one step back to you
And trying to find my way
Trying to find my way'
